Cardinal Pandulph, having urged the French to support the papacy against the rebellious John, does succeed in encouraging a French invasion of England only to discover, when John has reluctantly submitted to the papacy, that the French dauphin will not agree to call off his invading forces. The man who Richard left in charge of England soon grew unpopular, and John set up what was almost a rival government. The hapless John even managed to lose some of the Crown Jewels in a river as he fled from Lincoln in October. His reign was marked by disputes between John and his barons and bishops. However, in 1214 John returned to France with an army and failed to do any damage except gain a truce, having once more been let down by vacillating barons and the failures of allies. Last modified December 16, 2019. This was perhaps a little unfair as John did manage to do some things right. Corrections? After Philip agrees to drop all claim to the Faulconbridge lands, his mother admits that he is indeed Richard’s son.

This later 16th-century CE embellishment may have been a reaction from the aristocracy, who were already a bit miffed about the popularity of a tale where the commoners get the upper hand; essentially then, Robin was made one of them, hence his success. Henry, despite being only nine years old and having to pick up the pieces of a broken kingdom, would defeat the remaining rebel barons at Lincoln in May 1217 CE and go on to reign for 56 years until 1272 CE. In 1199 Richard died - while on a campaign, killed by a (un)lucky shot, before he could ruin his reputation - and John claimed the throne of England. It is difficult to be positive about a man who lost generations of royal expansion, which will always be clearly chartable.

In return, John promised to stay out of England when Richard went on crusade, although their mother persuaded Richard to drop this clause. One grant of several castles, given when John was first to be married (to an Italian heiress), provoked anger among his brothers and started a war between them. An English victory delivers young Arthur into the hands of King John. Shakespeare made few changes to the plot in his version, but the dialogue and insights about the characters are all his own. This expediency fails to end the war, however, with armies led by Eleanor and Arthur’s combatant mother, Constance, at the forefront. The son of Henry II of England (r. 1154-1189 CE) and Eleanor of Aquitaine (c. 1122-1204 CE), John succeeded his elder brother Richard I of England (r. 1189-1199 CE) as king. By the end of 1214, John had succeeded in mending his bridges with the top of the church, but his actions had alienated many further down and his lords. It is perhaps not a coincidence that these chroniclers were men of the cloth, and the medieval Church was the next enemy to be made by the king. Another connection with John, and another twist to the tale, is that Robin was actually of noble birth but had his lands taken from his family by the king as he schemed to oust his brother Richard while he and Robin were away on the Third Crusade. In his position as French King, Philip ordered John to his court (as he could any other noble who held lands from him), but John refused. By 1204 the French had taken Normandy - John’s barons undermined his war plans in 1205 – and by the start of 1206 they’d taken Anjou, Maine and chunks of Poitou as nobles deserted John all over the place. Later known as Magna Carta, this became one of the pivotal documents in English, and to some extents western, history. This second attachment proved troublesome for the English king since the second Isabella had been previously promised to a French count, Hugh de Lusignan, and so Philip II of France took exception to the wedding. Clearly, the medieval chroniclers who painted a dark picture of an evil and useless king were not quite telling the whole story. Books In 1194 CE Richard campaigned in France to defend his Angevin-Plantagenet lands, but disaster struck during his siege of the castle of Chalus on 6 April 1199 CE. John has gone down in history as one of the very worst kings ever to sit on the English throne, both for his character and his failures.

Back to the actual history of John’s reign. In the short term, Magna Carta lasted just three months before the war between John and the rebels continued. John was born on 24 December 1167 CE at Oxford, the youngest of four sons born to King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine. This success soon turns against John, however, when he finds that Arthur is too dangerous a presence because he has become a rallying point for John’s political enemies. The only historical reference within the complex web of legendary tales is that a man called Robert or Robin ‘Hood’ was a wanted criminal in Yorkshire in 1230 CE. Then he quashed the Irish rebellion of 1210 CE, infamously capturing the wife and eldest son of the rebellious baron William de Briouze and seemingly then allowing them to starve to death in captivity in Windsor Castle. This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon this content non-commercially, as long as they credit the author and license their new creations under the identical terms. It is true, though, that there were other similar cases of men living in forests outside the law, notably one Geoffrey du Parc in Feckenham Forest, Worcestershire around 1280 CE (who, incidentally, also had his own priest amongst his group just like Robin had Friar Tuck). Unfortunately, Isabella had been engaged to Hugh IX de Lusignan, and the result was a rebellion by Hugh and the involvement of French King Philip II.

When he returned a minority of barons took the chance to rebel and demand a charter of rights, and when they were able to take London in 1215, John was forced into negotiations as he looked for a solution. The king backed down, Langton was appointed archbishop and John accepted that England and Ireland were fiefs of the Papacy. When Richard became King Richard I of England in July 1189, John was made Count of Mortain, plus given other lands and a large income, as well as staying as Lord of Ireland and finally marrying Isabella. When the king died shortly after, Richard was crowned his successor in Westminster Abbey on 2 September 1189 CE. Another name frequently associated with the king is Robin Hood, the legendary outlaw who stole from the rich and gave to the poor, but there is little historical evidence of such a figure and, if he did exist, that he ever troubled John.

The war thus becomes an exercise in futility on all sides. Maps can make for grim reading. The involvement of John is almost certainly a later addition, shifting the timing of the story to highlight the king’s rapacious tax laws and the imposition of his own royal law courts. In concluding peace, Arthur kept Brittany (held from John), while John held his lands from the King of France, who was recognized as John’s overlord on the continent, in a manner greater than was ever forced out of John’s father.
