gideon the ninth

Tamsyn Muir s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. the blurb of this quite literally contains the phrase "lesbian necromancers" like thanks Tor you know you’re the only publisher I trust anymore, Well, I finished. And because it was one endless monologue in the beginning I put the book down twice and had to really work to finish it. 8 pairs of representitives (young people) from some vaguely defined (not a big deal though) "houses" - a necromancer and their cavalier (bodyguard essentially) - are invited to attend a challenge which involves investigating an ancient building beloning to the Emperor (very very very powerful necromancer of the First house) to become a Lyctor (some kind of super-necromancer-warlord for the Emperor). Gore and writing style reminded me of Black Panther, Red Wolf (which I also loved). I’ll be honest, I don’t even know how to summarize this book. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. I really, really wanted to like it, but picking out plot and character elements worth enjoying from the messy prose and rather underdeveloped world was too hard to be enjoyable.
But her childhood nemesis won t set her free without a service. Schwab, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author.

The titular Gideon is an 18-year-old orphan, a foundling who grew up in the bone-obsessed necromantic cult of the Ninth House.

Tamsyn Muir’s debut novel is sharp, unsettling, and so much fun. I have two large questions that I assume book 2 or 3 will answer. I finished it crying, because the ending punched me straight in the gut. I wasn't going to rate it but I feel SO strongly about this 1 star rating. But holy heck I hated how vague the settings were. It is the Gothic space adventure I didn't know I needed.
